Where does your water come from?30/04/2010
You turn on the tap and out comes water. What more is there to think about? But have you ever pondered on where the water comes from? Did you know that water gushing out of your tap could have once been flowing along a local river?
A new report, called Riverside Tales, by WWF-UK was released this week. It warns that taking too much water from rivers and streams is threatening wildlife such as salmon, water voles, otters and kingfishers.
By overusing water needlessly we could be having a seriously damaging effect on Britain’s wildlife. It seems absurd that a river could run low and that its inhabitants threatened all because we use water too liberally at home. And yet, that’s exactly what the report is suggesting.
So, next time you reach for the garden hose to give your plants a drink, pick up the watering can instead, and your local wildlife will thank you.
